Changes, transitions and psychoteraphy

Based on Willim Bridge´s model, developing and existential psychology, I offer some coments below.

For Bridge, there is an important distinction between "change", which is an external event (e.g., job loss or divorce) and "transition", which is the internal process an individual experiences in response to that change.

Each person has their own timing, and often, people go through the changes but don´t emotionally process the transition. We´ll look at this in detail.

Transitions can be expected and planned (anticipated), such as entering university, a career change, marriage, moving to a new city or country, or the birth of a child. However, they can still bring significant discomfort as people, their relationships, and their world change. However, they have a greater capacity to predict and anticipate change.

On the other hand, there are those unforeseen and sudden changes that are often more stressful and painful, such as an unexpected breakup or a job loss. These sudden changes give individuals less time to prepare and develop coping resources. Planned changes: Applying for and getting a new job. Dating and getting married. Building a family and deciding to have children. Moving to a new city or country for a better professional opportunity. Retirement based on seniority. Life cycle changes. Among others.

Unexpected changes:

Unwanted and/or teenage pregnancy. Dismissal. Separation due to infidelity. Unwanted marital separation. Premature and/or unexpected death of a family member. Illness. Migration due to natural disasters. Migration due to hunger or poverty. Forced displacement. Loss of assets. Bankruptcy. Among others.

To intervene, in existentialist psychological care, one first understands the socio-historical and anthropological situation and defines the Project and Desire to Be, guiding the person in overcoming impasses and emotional transition, focusing on the individual's fulfillment in their life so that they can become the author of their own story. For psychological care during change and transition, appointments are available online.
